Collection Guidelines

The following guidelines are based on the policies and procedures recommended by the Princeton University Library. Use of the archive is granted subject to specific rules that are intended to protect collections in the Department of Art and Archaeology and to insure their preservation for future researchers. 

  • Sign registry. 
  • Store coats, briefcases and other non-essentials in the designated area.

Use of Materials

  • Materials must not be marked on, defaced, altered, or traced on.
  • Special gloves may be required to handle photographic and other fragile material. 
  • Use pencils only.
  • Handle materials carefully and keep in order. If an item appears to be out of order, please inform the curator.

Restrictions

  • Eating and drinking are prohibited. 
  • Permission must be granted for the use of computers, cameras, and other special equipment. 
  • Permission to photocopy materials must be obtained from the curator.

Photo Duplication

  • Photo duplication inquiries should be submitted to the curator. 
  • Prints can only be ordered from materials for which the department holds the copyright, which includes the following archaeological collections: 
    • Rudolf Ernst Brünnow & Alfred von Domazewski Archive1897-1898
    • Howard Crosby Butler Archive
      • American Archaeological Expeditions to Syria 1899-1900
      • Princeton University Archaeological Expeditions to Syria 1904-1905 and 1909
      • American Society for the Excavation of Sardis 1910-1914
    • Committee for the excavation of Antioch-on-the-Orontes 1932-1939 

Publication

  • Researchers must secure written permission from Research Photographs to publish materials from the collection. 
  • The researcher assumes all responsibility for conforming to copyright laws. 
  • One gratis copy of any publication resulting from extensive research in the collections should be presented to the department. 
  • The correct form of citation is: Name of Collection, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University.
